What are concrete footings, and does my project need them?
Concrete footings are the wider concrete base at the bottom of a foundation, and in Sidney, OH, we pour them so the weight of your walls, deck or porch spreads out into the soil instead of pressing down on one narrow spot.
You're probably planning something that has to sit on the ground for good, like an addition, a garage, a porch or a deck, and the plans call for footings under it. The price mostly turns on how wide and deep each footing has to be, which comes from what it carries and how much weight the ground under it can hold, while the schedule turns on the weather and on what the permit office for your address asks for. When I come out, I'll put the details for your own project in writing.
Do you need concrete footings for what you're building?
Adding a room or addition
New walls need a continuous base under them so the addition doesn't settle away from the house.
Building a deck or porch
Posts carry their weight down to single points, so each one needs its own pad underneath.
Putting up a garage
A garage puts steady weight on the ground every day, and footings keep its walls level.
Replacing a base that failed
If old posts sank or a step pulled away, a properly set footing gives the new work solid ground.
How we pour concrete footings
A footing does its work out of sight, so we size and set it for what it has to carry, and I'll explain whether your project calls for continuous footings or pads before any digging starts. Then we mark out the layout, protect the lawn and the house, and dig down to firm, undisturbed ground rather than loose fill, since that's what the footing really rests on. We set the forms and the rebar, the steel bars that help the concrete hold together under weight, check the levels and pour. Once it has set, we strip the forms, backfill around it and clean up the work area.
Footings are often one part of a bigger job. If a section of your house has already settled, foundation raising can bring it back up before new work ties into it, and when a footing has to go through an old slab or walkway, concrete cutting opens a clean section instead of breaking up the whole thing. We can also pour the walls that sit on top as part of foundation installation.
Continuous footings
These run the full length of the foundation under its walls, so they suit additions, garages and other projects that rest on whole walls. They spread the weight of each wall evenly along its length.
Pad footings
These are single blocks of concrete set under one concentrated load, like a deck post, a porch column or a pier. They suit projects that stand on a few points instead of full walls, and each pad is sized for what sits on it.
What happens when you call about footings in Sidney?
Call or send us a message
Tell us what you're building and where, and we'll set a time for me to come out. If you already have plans or a site plan, please keep them handy.
Walk the site with me
I come out myself, look at the spot and ask how you plan to use what we're building. You get a written estimate of what the job includes, what it doesn't and which footing type fits.
Check permits and book the work
Once you're ready, we look into what the office covering your address asks for and tell you what we find. Then we schedule the work with the weather in mind.
Walk the finished footings together
Before we call it done, I walk the footings with you and our crew cleans up the work area. From there your builder or framer can take over.
Where your concrete footings budget should go
Put it into depth and width first.
Nobody sees a footing once the walls go up, so it's the first place people want to trim. I'd rather spend on digging to firm ground and making it as wide as the load and the soil need, because a footing that settles takes the walls, posts or steps above it down with it.
If the budget is tight, I'll tell you plainly which parts of the project can wait or be simpler, like the finish on a step or patio that comes later. The footing isn't one of them, and you'll see that reasoning written into the estimate.

Why Sidney homeowners call Sidney Concrete for footings
I look at every job myself
I come out to look at every job myself, and I work alongside our crew on the forming, pouring and finishing. The person who sized your footings is there when they go in.
Learned on new construction footings
I learned the trade pouring footings and slabs on new construction sites, and I started Sidney Concrete in 2023 to bring that same care to homes where families already live. That's why we protect your lawn and the house and keep the work area tidy around your routine.
Planned to Ohio's residential code
Sidney uses the Residential Code of Ohio to regulate construction, alterations, repairs and additions. We plan your footings around what the office covering your address asks for, so the base is right before anything gets built on it.

Questions about concrete footings
How much do concrete footings cost in Sidney, OH?
Concrete footings across the US usually cost about $500 to $2,000 per project, and that's a national figure, not our price. The price climbs as a footing gets wider, so heavy loads and weak soil push a job toward the high end. I'll put the figure for your own project in writing after I've seen the site.
How deep do concrete footings need to be in Ohio?
In a cold climate like ours, footings often need to sit below the frost line, the depth the ground freezes to, which means a deeper dig. We confirm the depth your project needs before any digging starts.
Can concrete footings be poured in winter?
Yes, once the ground has thawed, because a cold weather guide from a concrete trade group in neighboring Michigan says concrete should go only on ground that isn't frozen and is close to the concrete's own temperature. The same guide calls for covering fresh concrete right away with insulated blankets, straw or heated enclosures for at least 3 days. If you're planning a winter pour, please ask me at the estimate how we'd protect it.
What causes a concrete footing to settle?
A footing usually settles because it was set on loose fill or soft ground, or because it's too narrow for the weight on it and the soil under it. Water collecting around the base can soften the ground too, so we look at where the water runs when we plan the job.
What do I need to apply for a building permit in Sidney?
The City of Sidney says most permits need, at a minimum, building plans and a site plan drawn to scale, which is a drawing of your property showing where the work goes. If you already have either one, please share it at the estimate, since it saves a step.
How long does it take to get footings poured?
Most of the wait usually comes before the pour, while we check what the office covering your address asks for and wait for ground that isn't frozen. I'll walk you through the order of things at the estimate so you can plan the rest of your project around it.
Planning a project that needs footings?
I'll come out, look at the spot and put in writing what the footing work includes and what it doesn't.
Work that often goes with footings
Concrete footings in Sidney and the cities around it
Inside Sidney, the city's Building Inspection division issues building permits, and its list names work like new buildings, additions and decks rather than footings on their own, so the list doesn't settle whether your footing job needs one. Outside city limits, the city points owners to the Shelby / Miami County Building Department at 937-658-6220 or 937-440-8121, and the city also registers contractors for all of Shelby County, not just inside Sidney. Before we schedule the work, we check which office covers your address and what it asks for, and when a permit is needed, we take care of the application or help you with the parts that need your signature.
We're based in Sidney and work across Shelby County and the cities around it, and we do the same footing work for decks, porches and additions in Piqua and Troy. Many of the houses we see are older, so a new footing often goes in right beside an existing foundation or slab, and we take care around both. If you don't see your city listed, please ask us.
