What goes into building a slab foundation in Sidney?
Slab foundation building in Sidney means we grade your site and pour the concrete slab your new house or addition sits on. We time the work so the house can be closed in before winter.
Most people who call us have plans drawn and a lot picked out, and they want to know what it'll cost and when framing can start. The price mostly turns on the size of the slab, how much your lot slopes, how much grading and base work it needs and how many drain lines run under it. The schedule turns on getting the plumbing layout settled, the permit question answered and the weather on your side, and your estimate lays out your own job in writing.
Is a slab foundation right for your build?
New home on a gentle lot
A slab suits a single-level house with no basement planned, especially on a lot that's close to flat.
An addition at ground level
A family room or bedroom built off the back of the house often sits well on a slab.
Detached garage or workshop
A garage or workshop gets its floor and its foundation together when it's built on a slab.
Small commercial building
Owners of small commercial properties often pick a slab for a shop, office or storage building.
How we build a slab foundation
Before any digging, I go over the plumbing locations with you and your plumber, because every drain line has to be in place, in the right order, before we pour, and fixing or adding one afterward is hard and costly. Then we strip the topsoil, grade the site and pack the subgrade, the ground the slab sits on, so it doesn't settle with the dirt later. Over that goes a layer of gravel, which stops ground water from wicking up into the concrete, and a vapor retarder, a heavy plastic sheet that keeps moisture out of your floor. We set the forms and the rebar, the steel that holds the slab together, then pour, finish the top smooth for flooring and cut control joints, shallow grooves that give the concrete a place to crack where we choose instead of where it likes. After that the slab needs time to cure, which is how it gains its strength before the walls go up.
Some plans call for a different kind of base, and we handle those too. If your house needs walls below grade or a crawl space, that's our foundation installation work, and for a small commercial building we can also pour the lot out front through our concrete parking lot building service.
Frost-protected shallow foundation
This design suits slab homes on lots with moderate to low slopes. Insulation placed carefully around the building is what lets the foundation sit at a shallower depth, so the insulation work has to be done right.
Foundation built in separate pours
On steeper or uneven ground, a design poured in stages is the better choice, because it can step with the lot. On a sloped lot, expect it to take longer to build and cost more than a frost-protected slab.
What happens when you call about a slab foundation in Sidney?
Call or send us a message
You call (937) 658-9414 or use the contact form, and we get back to you to set a time for me to come out. It helps to tell us your address and what you're building.
I walk the site with you
I look at the lot, its slope and where water runs, and ask how you plan to use the building and where the drains go. Then I put in writing what the job includes and what it doesn't, so you know what you're paying for before you decide.
We sort permits and dates
Once you're ready, we look into the permit side for your address and tell you what we find. Then we schedule the work with the weather and your plumber's timing in mind.
We pour, finish and walk it
Our crew forms, pours and finishes the slab while keeping your lawn and house protected and the work area tidy. When the slab is done, we walk it with you before we call the job finished.
When to start building a slab foundation
Early enough to close the house in before freezing.
A slab foundation should be finished, and the house closed in and heated, before freezing weather arrives, so the start date matters as much as the plans do. I'd rather count back from the first hard cold with you than pick a date and hope the walls go up in time.
That means getting the drawings, the drain layout and the permit sorted early, since any one of them can push the pour back. In summer we pour early in the day when we can, because concrete that dries out in the afternoon heat can end up with a weak, dusty top.

Why Sidney homeowners call Sidney Concrete for slab foundations
I come out to every job
I look at every job myself, and I work alongside our crew on the forming, pouring and finishing. The person who walked your lot and wrote up your job is the one standing there when the concrete goes in.
Fully licensed and insured
We're fully licensed and insured. That protects you and your property while our crew is working on your lot.
Learned on new construction slabs
I learned the trade on new construction, pouring footings, slabs and flatwork like driveways and walks for houses nobody lived in yet, and started Sidney Concrete in 2023. A slab for a new house or an addition is the kind of work I grew up on.
Your permit office checked first
Before your job goes on the calendar, we find out whether your address falls under Sidney's Building Inspection or the county office and what it asks for. When you're ready, please call (937) 658-9414 or send us the estimate form, and we'll start there.
Questions about slab foundations
How much does a slab foundation cost in Sidney, OH?
There's no single figure, because the cost comes down to the slab's size, how much your lot slopes, how much grading and base work it needs and how many drain lines run underneath. A sloped lot that needs separate pours costs more than a frost-protected slab on gentle ground, as I covered above. Your estimate puts in writing what the job includes, so you can compare it fairly.
How long does it take to build a slab foundation?
A frost-protected slab on a gently sloped lot can go in with one placement of concrete, which cuts out several inspections and speeds up the build. A lot that needs separate pours takes longer, and the start date matters just as much, since the house should be closed in before freezing weather.
Does my contractor need to register with the City of Sidney?
Yes, the city's code says owners can't let a contractor work on their property in Sidney unless that contractor has registered with the Building Inspector. It's fair to ask any contractor about it before work starts, us included.
How do I keep water away from a slab foundation?
Start with proper grading so the ground falls away from the house, then add properly sized gutters and downspouts that carry roof water away from the foundation. Extending the eaves, when your plans allow it, helps too, and the gravel and vapor retarder under the slab handle moisture from below.
Should I add radon-resistant features to a new slab foundation?
It's worth considering, because building radon-resistant features in during construction typically costs less than treating the home after it's built. Once the slab is down that work gets harder, so we bring it up with you while we're still planning.
Do I need drain tile under my slab foundation?
Some sites need it and some don't, so it's a good question to raise before the pour, because drain tile, a perforated pipe that carries ground water away from the foundation, is far easier to put in before the concrete goes down. I'll look at your lot with you and tell you plainly whether I think it's worth it.

Building a slab foundation in Sidney, OH
Inside Sidney, the city's Building Inspection handles permits for homes of one to three units. Its permit list names new buildings, additions and site improvements but doesn't name slab foundations on their own, so please don't count on a slab being permit-free, and expect most permits to ask for at least building plans and a to-scale site plan of the property. If you're outside city limits, or the building is commercial, the city sends you to the Shelby / Miami County Building Department at 937-658-6220 or 937-440-8121. We check which office covers your address and what it asks for before we schedule, and when a permit is needed we take care of the application or help you with the parts that need your signature.
We're based in Sidney and work across Shelby County and the cities around it, so if your city isn't listed, please ask. Most of the slab work we're asked about is additions on homes where families already live and new houses on open lots, and we plan the same drains and dates on jobs in Piqua and Troy.
